Welcome to ENG3U: Grade 11 English, University Preparation

Welcome to ENG3U, Grade 11 English — University Preparation at the Canadian School of Excellence.

This course is designed to take your English skills beyond basic reading and writing and develop you into a critical reader, confident communicator, analytical thinker, and purposeful writer. Across 110 instructional hours, you will learn to examine how authors construct meaning, how language influences audiences, and how evidence can be transformed into strong academic arguments.

Throughout the course, you will explore short stories, rhetoric and non-fiction, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and a modern novel through an Independent Study Unit. You will also develop practical skills in media literacy, academic research, MLA documentation, oral communication, and digital media creation.

The course is organized around four essential areas of learning:

  • Oral Communication — listening, speaking, presenting, and communicating effectively with different audiences.
  • Reading & Literature Studies — interpreting texts, identifying literary techniques, and understanding how writers construct meaning.
  • Writing — developing ideas, constructing academic arguments, revising effectively, and using precise language.
  • Media Studies — analyzing media messages and creating effective media texts for specific audiences.

But ENG3U is not simply about understanding what a text says. You will learn to investigate how and why a writer makes particular choices. You will move from plot summary toward evidence-based literary analysis, using annotation, critical lenses, rhetorical analysis, thesis development, and structured academic writing.

By the end of this course, you should be able to approach a literary or media text with greater independence and ask deeper questions: What is the author doing? Why has the author made this choice? What evidence supports my interpretation? And how can I communicate that interpretation clearly and convincingly?
